In 1964 a group of West Cobb residents saw the need for a Scouting program in their area. The Lost Mountain Community Club agreed to sponsor the Troop while Lost Mountain Baptist and Midway Presbyterian Churches contributed moneys to help establish it.

Scoutmaster Jim Shurling and Assistant Robert Bladwin held the first meeting of Scout Troop 540 in April 1964 at the Lost Mountain Community Club. The Troop started with 5 boys. By 1969 the Troop had grown to 29 Scouts, 4 Assistants, and 5 Committee members.

From 1969 thru 1970 Hugh Poore served as Scoutmaster. The Troop grew so large that 2 groups split off from the Troop to form Troops 723 and 741.

In 1971 Jimmy Payne to on the roll of Scoutmaster until 1979. The ranks swelled again from 15 boys to 40. In 1977 the sponsorship for the Troop changed from the Lost Mountain Community Club to Due West United Methodist Church.

Scoutmaster Tom Hutto guided the Troop from 1980 thru 1986. In 1987 Jerry Hill took over the roll of Scoutmaster and served until 19xx with over 40 active Scouts.

From 19xx thru 1998, Dan Faulkner held the Scoutmaster position. During these years the Troop averaged 35 active Scouts.

In January 1999 Doug Schaefer became the Troops 7thScoutmaster. Under Doug Schaefer the Troop grew to over 65 active scouts. He served as our Troop's scoutmaster until 2003.

In 2003, Rob Thompson took over the position of scoutmaster. We know that with the support of the Church, parents, Scouters, and the community we can continue to provide an excellent program and develop exceptional young men.

In April 2004 Troop 540 celebrated its 40th birthday.  It has been growing steadily over the past 5 years and now averages between 60-70 registered youth.

In September 2006 the troop has reached a membership of 79 registered youth.  As a result, and in order to provide additional opportunities for the older boys within the troop, Crew 540 was established and opened to coed membership.  Bill Woodworth stepped forward as the first Crew Advisor.  In addition in September Mark Hoffman took over as Scoutmaster from Rob Thompson after 3 years of troop leadership.

Since the founding of the Troop in 1964 many organizations and people have helped make our program a success which has helped countless boys develop into exceptional young men.
